BLACKTOP ASTRONAUTS BY BRIAN WOOD IS EARTHBOUND & COMFORTABLE (PHOTOS)

American designer Brian Wood held his Fall 2013 presentation last night on Manhattan’s West Side at 320 Studios and his vision of the future is wet, windy and cold. The collection, titled Blacktop Astronauts, featured signature pieces and materials consistent with the Pratt Insitute and 2012 Black Alumni Honoree’s oeuvre: synthetic materials blended with natural, tailored and hand dyed fabrics.

Beauty, as a descriptor, isn’t often associated with straight men working in menswear fashion in New York unless someone is being objectified. Maybe its because the word occupies the realm of women and gay men, a domain, sometimes, void of violence. So imagine our surprise when menswear designer Brian Wood hit us up with Beauty Awakened, his new look book for Spring/Summer 2013, earlier this week. There it was, beauty: imagined by a straight, white guy with roots in Brooklyn and Jersey.

Brian Wood Launches LA Alumni Collection (PHOTOS)

New York based “Panty Raider” and sportswear designer Brian Wood created a classic when he launched his Brooklyn Alumni collection in 2006 for the Wood Valley High Collection for spring 2007. Featuring the faces of some of the borough’s iconic legends and natives, Wood’s shirts planted Notorious B.I.G, Larry David, Lil Kim and Michael Jordan (to name four) squarely on the chests of their admirers.
