Sahara Davenport has died. The 27 year old singer and drag performer from Texas is best known for her appearance on Season 2 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. News of her death was confirmed by her partner Manila Luzon on Twitter seven hours ago. Cause of death is unknown at this time.
I never met Sahara but I saw her in person last year at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York and, like, thousands of drag fans, saw her in clips on RuPaul’s show.
Sahara Davenport was born Antoine Ashley in Dallas, Texas in 1984 and had a BFA in dance from Southern Methodist University. He relocated to NYC after college to pursue his dreams, performing in local gay bars and appearing on television and videos. One of his first gigs was as a Beyonce impersonator suing a papparazo on the pilot episode of Judge Karen. Later he would appear on A&E’s 15 Films About Madonna, ABCs One Life To Live and in Kalup Linzy’s video Melody Set Me Free, his first fine art video. In 2010 Davenport released an EP titled “Pump With Me”. “Go Off”, his last single, was released in 2011. Other music projects Davenport appeared in include music videos “Girl Problems” by the group Girl Problems and “Gettin Over” by David Guetta and Chris Willis.
RIP, Sahara, and thank you.
