A huge 5.5 kilogram gold nugget was found by an amateur prospector in Australia yesterday ABC Australia is reporting.Weighing 177 ounces, or 5.5 kilograms, the nugget was found with a metal detector just outside Ballarat, a popular area for prospecting.
The owner of The Mining Exchange Gold Shop in Ballarat, Cordell Kent, said the find was one of the most significant in his 20 years in the business and expects the nugget to fetch more than $300,000.
Mr Kent said prospecting was becoming increasingly popular with gold valued at $1,600 per ounce.
The prospector has remained anonymous and the field where the nugget was found is being kept secret.
