Using surfaces of reflection Douglas Sirk took a nothing of a story, a suburban American melodrama, and created a picture steeped in color and reflection. This suburbia in Sirk’s vision is a rich palette in blues and greens. People are seen by others and, in turn, see themselves through mirrors, the glass of a blank tv set and in windows in All That Heaven Allows (from 1955), a Sirkian psychological drama. Neighbors and friends turning on one of their own who doesn’t turn out to be one of their own.

YOLO, the most overused and annoying phrase (after swag) ever, is now an Intel smartphone to be sold in Kenya. The Android powered phone sports a 3.5-inch touch display, runs on an Atom Z2420 processor and can hit speeds of up to 1.2GHz. YOLO can also encode and decode 1080p video, and also supports HSPA+ data speeds. The phone was announced by Intel and its Kenyan partner Safaricom at CES 2013.

For the second time in four years Michelle Obama turned to New York designer Jason Wu for her Inaugural gown. Mrs. Obama looked radiant last night in the ruby red chiffon floor length velvet creation which showcased her elegant shoulders and toned arms.

I taught the last class of the semester a few weeks ago at Hunter College, and in looking at my course notes I remembered sharing one of my favorite books with my students. It was through an exercise for a lesson on “Text & Performance.” Among other material, I handed out my personal copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s, “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” It was only after the student read from the text that I realized I had given up and shared a very vulnerable part of myself.
