White folks in the shape of corporations and powerful individuals are known for copying and discrediting black culture, twisting it so it’s unrecognizable so it becomes white regardless of its history. Last year’s Harlem shake, twerking and early rock and roll are just a few examples of whites taking from blacks things we’ve made. Hairstyles should be added to that list along with language.
Enter Marie Claire who praised Kendall Jenner for sporting “epic and bold” partial cornrows in her hair. See photo above.
Twat Marie Claire:
“@marieclaire Kendall Jenner takes bold braids to a new epic level: http://marie.cl/60199BHv http://twitter.com/marieclaire/status/451403750960562176/photo/1”
Twitter wasn’t gonna let that slide; birthing #BOLDBRAIDS in response to the slight.
“@Tidijii Welp RT @divinitymatovu: @marieclaire what’re your thoughts on fact that black women are reprimanded at work for wearing same #boldbraids”
“@MelechT Top 5 Tweet RT @desusnice The only #boldbraids we acknowledge http://twitter.com/desusnice/status/451446364904632320/photo/1”
“@CGWacko I was gonna get a haircut tomorrow, but now I gotta go out and get #boldbraids outta spite. Thanks, @marieclaire! >.
“@zellieimani US military doesn't like #BoldBraids even if @marieclaire does.”
“@madphury "@German_Chocl8: *spits out water* OMG 😫 RT @DarthShada: Star Jones gave you #BoldBraids @marieclaire http://twitter.com/DarthShada/status/451445403951841280/photo/1"”
And so on, forcing the magazine to apologize for the slight.
“@marieclaire We didn’t mean to offend or imply that cornrows were new. Our tweet was poorly worded.”
“@marieclaire We thought her hair looked great and recognize women have been styling their hair like this for ages.”
